The Final Cut – Love, Despair and Manifestations / exhibition @PUTTE, Ulm / 16.05.26 – 07.06.26 Valentin Hennig + ALL BEINGS INVOLVED IN THE STRAW THAT BROKE
At the invitation of curator Maria Pfrommer, the exhibition The Final Cut is dedicated to the creation, the miracle, and the ordeal of the film project The Straw That Broke, realized over more than seven years. The science fiction film explores the tension between reality and virtuality through a wide range of cinematic and narrative techniques—while remaining, at its core, a story about loss and love, hope and despair. Alongside the second cut (2023), the essay film The Final Cut (2026) is presented, weaving together previously unreleased scenes with documentary archival material. In addition, photographs and graphic works condense the process and perspectives of the project.

The exhibition presents itself as a monument to the hidden, overlooked, absurd, banal, and not-yet-fully-formed — to all those realms that entice artist and filmmaker Valentin Hennig toward painting, drawing and etching. The creative process unfolds as an interlude between investigative discovery and patient waiting, until colors, forms, and motifs begin to emerge. The works themselves ultimately decide what they wish to reveal to the artist and to the viewers — and which mysteries they choose to keep to themselves.
Paintings, drawings, and etchings from the past three years will be on display.
